According to a study conducted by the directorate of public health that will be published in the Tamil Nadu Journal of Public Health and Medical Research, the death rate in the post-Covid period between April and September 2022 was 4.28 per 1,000 people in the Kanyakumari district. This number indicated a nearly 8% rise compared to 3.97 per 1,000 population in the same months in 2019.

The research was a secondary analysis using data from the districts civil registration system software. The findings of the study showed that death rates among women climbed by 11%, 12% among the elderly, and 10% among those with heart disease, respectively.

While studies in the US and the UK showed similar trends, the authors of the study, Mrs. Meenachi S. and Mrs. Golden Sheeba of the DPH, stated that larger studies are needed to conclude that COVID is linked to changes in mortality patterns. According to the district death registration, there were 7,931 fatalities between April and September 2019 and 8,665 deaths between April and September 2022.

The all-cause mortality rate among women increased by 11% between April and September 2022, to 3.79 per 1,000, compared to 3.40 per 1,000 between April and September 2019. Death rates fell slightly to roughly 0.21 in the 0–18 age group, 0.44 in the 19–30 age group, and 1.08 in the 31–45 age group in 2022, but grew slightly to 4.42 in the 46–60 age group.

The death rate among adults over 60 increased by 12% to 29.27 per 1,000 in the first six months of 2022, compared to 26.10 per 1,000 in 2019. The death rate from heart disease and heart attacks increased by 10% to 1.48 per 1,000, whereas senility increased by 0.46 to 0.66 per 1,000.
